image INDIANA Robert

Robert Indiana (1928–2018) was an American artist closely associated with the Pop Art, known for his bold graphic style and use of words, numbers, and symbols. Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, he later adopted the name of his home state as his professional identity. He studied at several art schools, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, before moving to New York in the 1950s. Indiana gained international recognition in the 1960s with his iconic LOVE image, which features the letters L-O-V-E arranged in a square with the “O” tilted diagonally. Originally designed in 1964 as a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art, the design quickly became one of the most recognizable images in modern art. It was later reproduced as a U.S. postage stamp and transformed into large-scale sculptures installed in cities around the world. Indiana’s work often combines simple language with strong colors and geometric composition, reflecting themes of identity, spirituality, and American culture. Through paintings, prints, and sculptures, he explored the power of words as visual symbols. Today, Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculptures remain some of the most widely recognized works of public art, symbolizing universal ideas of connection and optimism.
